Strawberry Smooties

The Strawberry

Strawberry season is coming to a close locally, but it’s not too late to get your fix!

Some local farms still have pick-your-own

  • Strawberries are the only fruit that wear their seeds on the outside. The average berry is adorned with some 200 of them. No wonder it only takes one bite to get seeds stuck in your teeth.
  • Strawberries aren’t true berries, like blueberries or even grapes. Technically, a berry has its seeds on the inside. And, to be über technical, each seed on a strawberry is considered by botanists to be its own separate fruit. Whoa, meta!
  • Strawberries are members of the rose family. Should you come upon a bush of them growing, you’ll see: they smell as sweet as they taste.
  • The strawberry plant is a perennial. This means if you plant one now, it will come back next year and the following and the year after that. It may not bear fruit immediately, but once it does, it will remain productive for about five years.
  • Americans eat an average of three-and-a-half pounds of fresh strawberries each per year. It’s closer to five pounds if you count frozen ones. In a study, more than half of nine-year-olds picked strawberries as their favorite fruit. They’re nature’s candy!
  • Strawberries can also be pickled. Especially when picked green or unripe. If your berries are overripe, make jam! They are an excellent source of Vitamin C- a powerful natural antioxidant, rich in B-complex group of vitamins. contain a good amounts of vitamin B-6, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and folic acid. Together, these help the body metabolize carbohydrate, proteins and fats.
Many of our smoothies contain strawberries.
Organic strawberries, that is – the best!
Or, customize your own smoothie and take advantage of this powerful fruit.
It’s shaped like a heart for a reason.

Chef Mickey

Mickey Brennan has been in the food business since he was a child playing in his parent’s restaurant in Grand River, Ohio. His early start in the restaurant gave inspiration for college experiences ranging from Mountain Chalets in Switzerland to the premier resort in the Ozarks of Missouri. After college when he recieved his BA in Hotel Restaurant Management at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA, Mickey returned to the Cleveland area to take on running his family business. It was an honor to be side-by-side with his parents and family for almost 10 years before he decided to hone in his skills by continuing his education. He committed to pursuing a traditional French Culinary degree from California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, CA. Prior to moving to San Francisco, Mickey and his wife, Caroline, had been dabbling in organics and living food detox adventures. Culinary school was a shock to what they had personally been exploring related to health and food, so Mickey’s choice to do his externship work at Cafe Gratitude seemed like a perfect balance. Cafe Gratitude is an all organic, vegan cafe featuring mostly raw dishes. This was truly heaven for Mickey. The inspiration from this experience and the growing desire to raise the level of health in the world are the foundation of where Mickey is today- gratefully serving his community with health and great tasting food. He looks forward to spending time with you in class!

21/14 Day Living Food Detox and Juice Fast Programs
These are the programs we offer at
The Sprout and how they work:
Everyday we spend approximately 70% of our energy creating enzymes to digest food.
The Living Food Detox
and
Juice Fast
give your body a break from digestion by using raw foods and juices which have active, live enzymes to do the work of breaking down food.
This allows your body to do
what it does best!
HEAL.
The Living Food Detox and Juice Fast programs allow your body to take a break from digestion so it can heal and clean out.
